About the Investigator

Dr. Freudenberg-Hua is an assistant professor of psychiatry, molecular medicine and genetics at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders. She is a faculty member of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.  She is also an attending psychiatrist at the Geriatric Center at the Zucker Hillside Hospital.

Dr. Freudenberg-Hua received her medical degree from the University of Hamburg in Germany. Following clinical and research work in medical genetics at the University of Bonn School of Medicine, she completed her medical specialization in general and geriatric psychiatry at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Research Focus

Dr. Freudenberg-Hua’s research focuses on the identification of genetic risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases through the computational analysis of large genetic data sets. She currently studies several neurodegeneration-related phenotypes, including Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which are contrasted with cognitively healthy elderly people (nonagenarians and centenarians). Her work integrates knowledge and annotations from large genome databases with genetic and phenotypic data from patients. When combined with clinical information, such genetic insights can provide more precise diagnosis and can also improve disease risk prediction to develop better preventive measures. Thus, the ultimate goal of her research is the translation of genetic data analyses into novel ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat dementia.
